    Hand in Hand Parenting

This is a fantastic resource for parents. Hand in Hand principles promote parenting through connection rather than control. This results in stronger relationships between parents and kids, less conflict, and healthier, more balanced teens/adults down the road. Here’s an excerpt from their website:

“The Hand in Hand Parenting approach, Parenting by Connection, helps families build a stronger parent-child connection. This strong emotional bond is the hallmark of happy, well-adjusted families. It’s also the soundest way to a better society.

Recent research shows that regardless of background, a close parent-child connection throughout childhood and beyond is the strongest factor in preventing a variety of health and social problems, including young people’s involvement in drugs, violence, and unintended pregnancies.”

Check out their website for tons of resources and I highly recommend checking out the video on their main page. https://www.handinhandparenting.org

He’s a pediatric neuropsychiatrist and he offers parenting strategies based on how kids’ brains are wired and the understanding of what is going on with them on a neurological level. Fascinating stuff and really effective! Here are his top books:

    Jean Twenge
Most anyone who knows me knows my passion about the crisis of kids and screens. A lot of very compelling science has been compiled in an entertaining bestseller called iGen.

    Angela Duckworth
We all know that intelligence isn’t always a predictor of success. Some kids with a high IQ don’t do well in school, and sometimes kids with average or below average intelligence do exceptionally well in school. Why is that? What predicts success and perseverance? Angela Duckworth studied olympic athletes, CEO’s, students, West Point cadets, people in the entertainment industry, professors, and so on. She looked at the personality/character components that led to success in many areas- not just academics. And she wrote a book about what she found. It’s called GRIT! Check it out. Also check out this really great video of Angela speaking to a group of high school seniors. Lots of great insight and tips!

I am a huge fan of Brooks Gibbs’ approach to bullying and social confidence. I work a lot with kids on developing resilience and a sense of self sufficiency and these two things are tremendous in addressing peer conflict and bullying. Brooks does a great job of teaching these concepts through very simple approaches with kids and teens. Check out his website at https://www.brooksgibbs.com.

This is one of my favorite videos showing Gibbs’ approach in action. Feel free to show this video to your kids and discuss it with them!
